von Luckner ceramic

See the our latest newsletter submitted Friday, May 29, 2009 - On June 9, 2009 we are going to celebrate the Count's birthday as every year. Same place too: the von Luckner Room in the "Schenke am Ochsenberg".

Dear members dear friends,

We are going to open an exhibition soon!

The archeological museum of our university named Robertinum (http://www.altertum.uni-halle.de/) offered to support our plan to open an own museum by doing an exhibition. This museum is one of only two in Germany which "survived" World War II. The university wishes to say thanks to Felix Count von Luckner and to our society representing the Count now.

We feel honored by such an offer and are now preparing the exhibition which will be opened at the "Museum Night" on April 25 and will only be in that night from 6 p.m to midnight, information in German under http://www.halzigundleiple.de/p2.php?maktuell=53

The press got informed, and we among others asked the people of Halle for help. As you will know in 1977 von Luckners home was marauded by the communists and they threw many things simply away - a shame!

But some people had the chance to save several things. So we got a framed picture of the Norwegian Queen. This picture was used as part of the camouflage of the "Seeadler", which seemed to be the Norwegian ship "Irma" for the British officers who inspected the ship. The picture we now have was placed in the saloon of the "Seeadler". Natives from the South Sea brought the picture from the wreck of the "Seeadler" at Mopelia and gave it to the Count in 1937 when he came back with the yacht "Seeteufel". Von Luckner brought the picture Halle, and there it almost got lost - almost, now we can show it to the public. We hope to be able to purchase the picture later on, during the exhibition we will collect money for this purpose.

We need your HELP !!!

But also other people donated items, we intend producing a catalogue hoping to be able to show all wonderful things to our membership and those who might be interested.

Furthermore, we hope to get our Felix Count von Luckner Museum opened in not too far future here in Halle.

So, please, if you know persons who might have personal items of Count von Luckner, ask them to donate it to our society. It is guaranteed that all items will remain here in our archive. We have an inventory and intend acting as every other serious and professional museum learning from other museums here in Halle which start accepting us as a reliable partner. From now on we want to be the place von Luckner items can be archived and saved for further generations.

A short information concerning the ship "Seeteufel". This ship got saved by being sold within St. Petersburg. The new owner intend involving our society in the use of the ship, but at the moment we cannot inform about details because we do not know them.

We will keep you informed!

Best regards
Matthias J. Maurer

Memorial to Douglas Page
von Luckner sunk 14 ships as a merchant raider in WW1. He tried to save the lives of his enemies, successfully with one exception. It is written in the biography as follows:

...only one seaman (the freighter "Horngarth" from Cardiff) died after having
injured by hot water caused by a leak in a steam pipe. This damage was
caused by a shell of the "SEEADLER".

The seaman was Douglas Page.
