Newsletter 14 January 2011

Dear members, dear friends,

First of all let me wish you a Happy New Year and all the best for 2011.

On July 1 last year, we - among others - already informed you about our plans to create a "von Luckner Basement" at our headquarters here in Halle. This time we wish to inform you on the state of affairs and show you some pictures.

The idea we had during the exhibition "Boot" at Düsseldorf in the beginning of last year, because our collection is increasing and we, furthermore, would like to have a place for meetings.

On June 11, 2010, we for the first time came together to get the things done which were mostly necessary for our rooms, removing litter, dust and garbage. On November 20 we for the again met in a bigger group (in the meantime some of us did some separate work in the rooms) to remove loose plastering, old electrical cables and to do some small repair work.

This year we intend to install some facilities like a restroom/bathroom and a small kitchen to be able accomodating guests and perhaps to have the first meetings in our new "von Luckner Basement".

Lot of things to do, but lot of things we have done.

Time to thank those who helped in the best way they could. In alphabetical order we find the names of our members as follows:

Andre, Peter

Becker, Horst

Beßler, Heinz

Breternitz, Hartmut

Dragoschy, Andreas

Goedeke, Hans

Klaiberg, Michael

Krasselt, Hans-Jürgen

Maurer, Matthias J.

Muchau, Michael

Rüdiger, Peter

Winklhofer, Peter

Thank you very much!!!

Not to forget that we had a lot of fun during our work. We really hope that many of you living not in Halle will have the chance to see the rooms and looking forward to our next activities. Soon you will find some impressions in our homepage.

Furthermore we had in the second half of 2010 some other highlights which should be mentioned.

John Fasulo from Beacon, NY, visited us here in Halle in July. A too short stay but a wonderful time. We all hope that you will come again, John please next time with your family, and, of course, that other members and friends of our society will follow him to see the wonderful city that Count von Luckner saved in 1945.

In September the Ambassador of the USA, his Excellence Philip D. Murphy, visited together with Hans-Dietrich Genscher (former Secretary of State of Germany) Halle and the memorial for the Timberwolves. There, lot of our local members met the guests. We are still in contact to H.E. Murphy!

We had a first meeting with members of the Wandlitzer Felix Graf von Luckner Marine Historik Sport Club 2001
e.V. We intend to create a partnership and hope to get this realized in 2011.

Thanks to Lenore Meyer and John Fasulo for working for the American Contingent, especially Lenore contacted many members putting together facts, addresses etc. and even had the chance to meet some of you in the US. Great work indeed!

By the way, we updated our member list - thank you Terry! - and are 246 members now from 21 nations. Please,
take a look at our new list in our website.

As you can see, we are an active and growing society worldwide. We are looking forward to your messages and
ideas - and: new members.

Best regards from Halle - the "von Luckner City "

Matthias J. Maurer
President
